A Lesson in Cleaning

If you enlist your children’s help to complete chores around your home, below is a great post from The Tutoring Center, Dubai about how you can include small lessons in their tasks.

It All Starts With Your Plan

More often than not, the first time that your children will see your cleaning plan or list will be when you are delegating the tasks. However, by this time your children have missed out on an important time-management lesson. Next time, include them in the process.
  • Teach your children any techniques you use to create your list and to ensure there are no forgotten items.
  • As you prioritize each task, share with them the thought pattern behind your decisions, including how important this step is.
  • When you are calculating an estimated time frame for each task, vocalize your thoughts so that they can learn about including preparation time and resources.
  • Once you are ready to put it all together, enlist their help to take care of each of the tasks and to ensure that you get the most out of the time available.
Not only is this a great hands-on lesson for children to learn, but it also provides them with a general framework which they can use when managing competing study tasks and obligations.

Measurements and Space

If you are looking for a more basic lesson for younger students, moving your furniture as you clean can help. As you move from room to room, instead of moving your couch a small amount while you clean around and underneath it, ask your children to take its measurements and find a suitable space for it while you complete a thorough clean. During this, if you can see that your student was incorrect with their calculation and the item won’t fit, be sure to help them try to move it anyway. This will give them an opportunity to visualize where they made the mistake and improve on their next attempt. Once they have the hang of this, remove the measurement step and ask them to use only their visual-spatial awareness and improve this skill.
